Digital transformation in a petri dish: where does culture fit in?

Organisations can be described as complex systems that are built on rules: if x then y. Given this, when that happens, then the organisation will respond with the other. The problem, and anyone who has joined a large organisation can attest to this, is that many of these rules are unspoken, they are part of the underlying operating system of the organisation, and as such are often assumed knowledge.

Attempting digital transformation of an organisation without considering these underlying rules is a fool’s errand: you can build the best, most integrated IT systems in the world, but unless you put appropriate effort into helping the organisation adjust to these tools you will fail in your transformation attempts.
